Overview of the Role

The Department of Film and Digital Arts at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Film and Digital Arts beginning in August 2027.

The successful candidate will teach foundational and advanced studio courses across a range of production approaches and aesthetics. The department is especially interested in candidates with expertise in traditional narrative film and television production, 3D animation, or gaming.

Teaching & Creative Areas

The department particularly welcomes candidates with expertise in two or more of the following areas:

• Directing

• Cinematography

• Screenwriting

• Producing

• Digital Post-Production

• Production Design

• Sound

• Gaming

• Animation

• Traditional Narrative Film

• Television Production

• 3D Animation

The position involves teaching both introductory and advanced studio courses.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

• Teach foundational and advanced Film and Digital Arts courses.

• Contribute to production-focused studio instruction.

• Develop students’ practical and creative skills.

• Maintain an active creative and/or scholarly practice.

• Participate in departmental and university academic activities.

• Support student development across Film Production, Animation, Gaming, Screenwriting, and related areas.

• Contribute to the department’s teaching and creative mission.

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must have, by the start date:

• An M.F.A. or Ph.D. in:

  • Film Production

  • Digital Media

  • Cinematic Arts

  • Animation

  • Gaming

  • Related field

Selected candidates must provide official certification showing successful completion of all degree requirements before beginning employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates with:

• Expertise and/or teaching experience in at least two relevant production areas.

• Experience teaching introductory and advanced studio courses.

• A strong portfolio of creative work.

• Experience across varied production approaches and aesthetics.

• Commitment to supporting the university’s local and global educational mission.
