📋 Overview of Role

The Department of Economics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in AI and Economics. The position focuses on scholars examining the impact of artificial intelligence on the economy, particularly those whose research develops or extensively uses novel AI tools.

The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching, independent research, mentoring, and service to the department, university, and economics profession.

🎯 Key Responsibilities & Teaching Scope

• Teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

• Develop and maintain an active and independent research program focused on AI and economics.

• Conduct research that develops or relies extensively on novel AI tools.

• Develop or teach courses addressing aspects of the intersection between AI and economics.

• Provide service to the Department of Economics, University, and economics profession.

• Support innovative research, transformative teaching, and thoughtful student mentoring.

🎓 Qualifications & Candidate Profile

• Required Education: Ph.D. in Economics or an equivalent degree, or expected completion before the employment start date.

• Experience & Specializations: Expertise in the impact of AI on the economy, with research that develops or extensively uses novel AI tools.

• Teaching Profile: Demonstrated ability to teach effectively at undergraduate and graduate levels.

• Alternative Appointment: Candidates who have not yet completed the Ph.D. but will fulfill all requirements within the first appointment year may initially be appointed as Instructor and subsequently converted to Assistant Professor.

💼 Remuneration & Benefits

• Salary: $185,000–$192,000 on a 9-month service basis, paid over 12 months.

• Salary is competitive and based on qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

• Benefits include Health, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, Retirement Plan, Paid Time Off, and Tuition Waivers for employees and dependents.

• Position is intended to be eligible for work authorization sponsorship, subject to the stated H-1B sponsorship limitation.

• Target start date: August 16, 2027.
