Overview of Role

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of American Literature & Culture (Sports Studies) in the College of Liberal Arts for the 2027–28 academic year.

The position focuses on Literatures and Cultural Studies, with particular interest in contemporary American literature and culture, especially scholarship at the intersection of Sports Studies and Literary Studies.

Key Responsibilities & Teaching Scope

The successful candidate will be expected to:

• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Literary and Cultural Studies.

• Teach ENGL 1305 – Cultural Studies Writing.

• Teach courses in American Literature and Culture.

• Maintain an active research programme.

• Publish in peer-reviewed journals.

• Supervise and mentor student research.

• Contribute to teaching, research, and service.

• Participate in academic and programme activities across UTRGV as assigned.

Because UTRGV operates across multiple locations, the position may require presence at different sites within the Rio Grande Valley.

Qualifications & Candidate Profile

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in one of the following:

• English

• Literature

• American Studies

Applicants in American Studies must have at least 18 graduate credit hours in English or Literature.

Candidates should also demonstrate:

• Active research with peer-reviewed publications.

• Potential for effective undergraduate and graduate teaching.

• Potential to supervise and mentor student research.

• Capacity to maintain an active programme of research.

• Preparation to teach Literary and Cultural Studies courses.
