Overview of Role

The Economics Program at The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor of Economics.

This is a permanent, non-tenure-track position with opportunities for promotion. The university seeks an economist with a strong commitment to teaching, mentoring, and student success. Candidates from all areas of Economics are welcome to apply.

Key Responsibilities & Teaching Scope

• Teach 4 courses per semester during the fall and spring terms.

• Teach introductory and principles-level Economics courses.

• Potential courses include:

  • Basic Economics (ECO 101)

  • Principles of Microeconomics

  • Principles of Macroeconomics

• Teach upper-level courses in the candidate’s area of expertise where appropriate.

• Deliver courses primarily face-to-face.

• Be prepared to teach in both in-person and online formats.

• Hold regular office hours.

• Advise and mentor students.

• Attend faculty meetings.

• Participate in university, professional, and community service.

• Maintain current disciplinary knowledge.

• Support student participation in local or community-engaged research opportunities.

Qualifications & Candidate Profile

Required Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Economics or a closely related discipline, or

• ABD status with the doctoral degree completed by the time of appointment.

• Ability to communicate Economics concepts clearly and effectively.

• Ability to build professional relationships with students and colleagues.

• Strong organizational and course-management skills.

• Ability to mentor students in research and community-engaged projects.

Preferred Qualifications

• Record of high-quality teaching.

• University-level teaching experience.

• Experience teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds.

• Experience with online teaching.

• Experience designing online courses.
