Overview of the Opportunity

The Division of Social Science at New York University Abu Dhabi invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Associate position in Economics.

The successful candidate will divide their time equally between:

• Independent research – 50%

• Collaborative research – 50%

The collaborative component will be undertaken with Professors Torsten Figueiredo Walter and Luca Maria Pesando.

The appointment is expected to begin on September 1, 2027, subject to final budget approval, and may continue for up to three years.

Research Focus

The collaborative research will examine household composition in low- and middle-income countries.

The project explores how household structures change across time and space and investigates:

• Global variation in household size and composition

• Relationship between household structures and economic development

• Effects on poverty measurement

• Intra-household decision-making

• Economic development

• Economic demography

• Family studies

The project challenges static definitions of households by examining their changing composition and structure.

Key Responsibilities

The Post-Doctoral Associate will:

• Conduct independent research.

• Collaborate with Professors Torsten Figueiredo Walter and Luca Maria Pesando.

• Work with large-scale household surveys and census datasets.

• Conduct applied quantitative data analysis.

• Contribute to academic research and publications.

• Analyse household composition and demographic dynamics.

• Participate in the academic activities of the NYUAD Division of Social Science.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Applicants should:

• Have received a Ph.D. no more than 5 years before appointment, or

• Be close to completing a Ph.D.

Relevant fields include:

• Economics

• Demography

• International Development

• Sociology

• Public Policy

• Closely related disciplines

Required Research Skills

Candidates should demonstrate expertise in:

• Large-scale household surveys

• Census data

• Applied data analysis

• Managing large datasets

Familiarity with household surveys such as:

• Labour Force Surveys

• Living Standards Measurement Surveys

is specifically required.

Applicants should also have strong analytical skills using tools such as:

• R

• Stata

• Python

• GIS

Experience with academic writing and publishing is also expected.

Preferred Experience

Experience with:

• Fieldwork

• Primary data collection

• Household-level data collection

will be considered an advantage.

Teaching

The position does not require teaching.

However, the posting states that opportunities to gain teaching experience may be available for additional compensation.

The successful candidate will join a large interdisciplinary Social Science community at NYU Abu Dhabi, including:

• More than 20 postdoctoral fellows

• Approximately 70 faculty members
