Generative Artificial Intelligence and the Reshaping of Managerial Capabilities

Journal: Journal of Management Development
Publisher: Emerald Publishing
Special Issue
Manuscript Submission Opens: 30 September 2026
Manuscript Submission Deadline: 31 March 2027

The Journal of Management Development invites submissions for a Special Issue examining how generative artificial intelligence is transforming managerial work and redefining the capabilities managers need to develop, exercise, and sustain in AI-enabled organizations.

About the Special Issue

Generative AI tools are rapidly changing managerial work by performing activities such as drafting reports, summarising meetings, analysing data, and generating decision options. As a result, managers are increasingly moving from directly producing work toward directing, evaluating, verifying, and taking responsibility for AI-generated outputs.

Rather than simply describing how generative AI changes managerial work, this Special Issue focuses on management development: what managers need to be capable of in AI-enabled workplaces, how these capabilities can be developed and assessed, and how organizations can redesign management development for continuous technological change. Contributions should combine analytical rigour with practical and transferable implications.

Submissions may address, but are not limited to:

  • Generative AI and changing managerial capabilities

  • Developing managers for AI-enabled workplaces

Interdisciplinary perspectives from human resource management, organizational behaviour, information systems, operations, strategy, and related fields are particularly encouraged.

Research and Practical Focus

  • What managers must be able to do in response to generative AI

  • How new managerial capabilities can be developed

  • How these capabilities can be assessed

  • How managers can remain accountable for AI-supported decisions

  • How management development can become continuous and embedded

  • How findings can be translated into practical guidance for organizations

Research offering transferable insights beyond a single organization or case is especially encouraged.

The Special Issue also connects its societal relevance with SDG 4 – Quality Education, SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.
