Cryptocurrency Markets in Emerging Economies: Payments, Financial Inclusion, and Market Dynamics

Journal: International Journal of Emerging Markets
Publisher: Emerald Publishing
Special Issue
Manuscript Submission Opens: 1 September 2026
Manuscript Submission Deadline: 1 March 2027

The International Journal of Emerging Markets invites research exploring the development, functioning, and broader implications of cryptocurrency markets in emerging economies, with particular attention to payments, financial inclusion, market dynamics, regulation, and data-driven analysis.

About the Special Issue

Cryptocurrency markets are becoming increasingly significant in emerging economies, where conventional financial systems may face challenges such as limited access to financial services, high transaction costs, currency instability, and institutional constraints. Digital assets, stablecoins, and crypto-based payment systems may provide alternative mechanisms for domestic and cross-border transactions while creating important implications for remittances, monetary policy, currency substitution, and financial sovereignty.

The Special Issue seeks to connect research on payment systems, financial inclusion, and cryptocurrency market microstructure. It particularly encourages research using granular evidence such as blockchain transactions, high-frequency trading records, behavioural indicators, and other large-scale datasets to examine how these markets operate and whether they support or undermine economic and financial development. Empirical and theoretical contributions spanning finance, economics, and data science are welcomed.
