The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) invites applications from Indian nationals for a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) position under a sponsored research project in the Department of Electrical Engineering.

Position Overview

About the Opportunity

The project focuses on developing and validating an AI-assisted cyber-physical protection and monitoring architecture for IEC-61850-based digital substations.

The research will combine power system protection, digital substations, artificial intelligence/machine learning, cybersecurity, and monitoring technologies to develop secure and interpretable solutions for modern power systems.

Essential Qualification

Candidates must have:

• M.E./M.Tech. in Electrical Engineering

• Specialization in Power Systems or equivalent

• Qualified GATE/NET

Key Responsibilities

The selected JRF will work on:

• Conducting a detailed literature review on digital substations, AI/ML in power system protection and monitoring, IEC 61850-related cyber risks, and utility deployment constraints.

• Defining cyber-physical threat models and operational use cases with utility relevance.

• Building a research data framework covering:

  • Protection settings

  • Process bus data

  • Event logs

  • Network telemetry

  • Asset-condition inputs

• Developing a baseline digital substation test environment/simulation workflow for early identification and mitigation of cyber risks.

• Developing, validating and deploying novel AI-based cyber-secure architectures for process-bus and station-bus environments in IEC-61850-based digital substations.

• Working with sampled values, GOOSE, MMS, event logs and condition-monitoring inputs to develop edge-native, interpretable and cyber-secure analytics.

Project Duration

The appointment is for 4 years or until completion of the project, whichever is earlier.

Fellowship

INR 40,000 per month + HRA as per institute rules

Additional contingency support for attending conferences at the national/international level is indicated in the advertisement.
