About the Research Opportunity

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at IIT Roorkee is recruiting a Junior Research Fellow for a research project sponsored by the Armament Research Board, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Delhi.

The project focuses on investigating the structural behaviour of unaged and aged sandwich composites used in armament applications.

A systematic experimental approach will be employed to characterize Nomex, PMI foam, and PVC foam core sandwich composites.

The research will examine the effects of hygroscopic ageing, moisture exposure, mechanical loading, delamination, and fatigue on the performance of these composite materials.

Essential Qualifications

Candidates must possess the following qualifications:

Undergraduate Qualification

  • B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or an equivalent discipline.

Postgraduate Qualification

  • M.E./M.Tech. in Machine Design, Applied Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering, or an equivalent discipline.

Additional Preference

  • GATE-qualified candidates will be preferred.

Applicants should possess the relevant academic background required to undertake experimental and analytical research on sandwich composite materials.

Project Research Areas and Responsibilities

The selected Junior Research Fellow will contribute to research activities involving:

1. Experimental Characterization of Sandwich Composites

  • Investigating the structural behaviour of sandwich composite materials.

  • Characterizing Nomex, PMI foam, and PVC foam core sandwich composites.

  • Comparing the mechanical behaviour of aged and unaged specimens.

2. Hygroscopic Ageing and Moisture Resistance

  • Evaluating hygroscopically aged composite specimens.

  • Studying moisture resistance and its detrimental effects on mechanical properties.

3. Delamination Behaviour

  • Investigating delamination behaviour under Mode-I and Mode-II loading.

  • Comparing delamination characteristics of aged and unaged sandwich composite samples.

4. Fatigue Performance Evaluation

  • Assessing fatigue performance of sandwich composite specimens.

  • Evaluating the effects of ageing on fatigue behaviour.

5. Comparative Material Analysis

  • Analysing the performance of Nomex-based sandwich composites.

  • Comparing findings with PMI foam and PVC core-based sandwich composites.

Fellowship and Remuneration

The selected candidate will receive:

INR 37,000 per month

The advertisement does not separately specify HRA or additional allowances.

Project Duration

The advertised project period is:

01 January 2026 to 31 December 2028 (3 Years)

The exact joining date and individual appointment tenure are not separately specified in the provided advertisement.

Preference for Reserved Category Candidates

The advertisement states that preference will be given to SC/ST candidates with equal qualifications and experience.

Ph.D. Opportunity

The advertisement mentions that the selected candidate will have an opportunity to pursue a Ph.D. at IIT Roorkee.

It further states that, once the project is completed, a Ph.D. candidate will receive an MHRD fellowship as per institute policy.

Candidates should refer to the institute's applicable admission and fellowship rules for the relevant conditions.

Selection Process
