Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) invites applications for Research Scientist positions across various academic departments, centres, schools, and interdisciplinary programmes to support the Institute’s research activities.

Position Overview

About the Opportunity

IIT Bombay is recruiting Research Scientists to strengthen research activities across its academic departments, centres, schools, and interdisciplinary programmes.

Research Scientists will contribute their technical and research expertise while also supporting the Institute’s Ph.D. students through research guidance and independent mentorship.

Eligibility & Experience

Candidates seeking consideration for the Research Scientist position should have:

• A Ph.D.

• At least 5 years of significant research and professional experience after Ph.D.

The respective academic units will evaluate applications. Meeting the eligibility requirements does not automatically guarantee appointment.

Important: IIT Bombay’s own Ph.D. students are not eligible for this position.

Salary & HRA

Consolidated Base Salary: INR 1,00,000 per month on a pro-rata basis.

HRA: Payable according to Government of India norms and stated in the advertisement as currently 30% of the consolidated salary.

Contingency Grant

Selected Research Scientists will receive a:

Non-lapsable Contingency Grant of INR 1,00,000 per annum

Appointment Duration

The initial tenure of a Research Scientist will be:

1 year

The appointment may be extended for 2 additional years, subject to assessment.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Each Research Scientist will have a mentor whose expertise is closest to the Research Scientist’s area.

• Support IIT Bombay Ph.D. students through research guidance, technical expertise, and independent research mentorship.

• Contribute to research activities within the respective academic unit.

• Undertake reasonable academic/administrative responsibilities assigned by the Head of the Academic Unit, in addition to research.

Selection & Evaluation

Applications will be evaluated by the respective academic units at IIT Bombay.
