Overview of the Fellowship

The Max Weber Programme for Postdoctoral Studies at the European University Institute is a highly selective postdoctoral programme in the historical, humanities, and social sciences.

It is open to scholars from anywhere in the world who are within five years of completing their Ph.D. The programme typically hosts around 65 Fellows each year across EUI’s academic units.

Preference is given to applicants who have recently completed their doctorate and have not previously held a postdoctoral fellowship.

• Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies

Fellowship Duration

The Max Weber Programme offers:

• One-year fellowships

• Two-year fellowships

The duration depends on the host academic unit.

In exceptional cases, support may be extended to a third year, including certain opportunities in Economics and selected special fellowship arrangements.

Funding & Benefits

The Fellowship currently provides:

• Approximately INR 2.71 lakh per month as the main fellowship grant

• Family allowances, where applicable

• Health insurance

• Mission and research funding

• Personal mission and research fund of approximately INR 1.63 lakh

• Access to EUI research facilities and library resources

• Professional development support

During the second year, eligible Fellows may also apply for a part-time Assistant Professor contract for 12 months, involving teaching and Ph.D. mentoring.

This additional appointment provides approximately INR 92,000 per month on top of the fellowship grant.

Eligibility

Applicants should:

• Have completed a Ph.D.

• Be within five years of Ph.D. completion

• Come from any country or nationality

• Demonstrate strong academic and research potential

Preference is given to applicants who:

• Have recently completed their doctorate.

• Have not previously held a postdoctoral fellowship.

Eligible applicants are automatically considered for relevant special grants.

Some Fellows may also be selected for an additional year at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva.
