Overview of Role

The Institute for the Study of Religion, Economics and Society at Chapman University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Economics of Religion beginning in Fall 2027.

The fellowship is designed for promising scholars whose research connects the study of religion with Economics, Political Science, Sociology, or related social science disciplines. Fellows will pursue independent research while participating actively in the intellectual and research community of IRES.

Key Responsibilities & Research Scope

• Conduct independent research related to religion, economics, society, or associated social science fields.

• Develop research connecting the study of religion with Economics, Political Science, or Sociology.

• Participate in IRES research seminars and workshops.

• Present scholarly work at least once during the fellowship.

• Contribute to conferences, workshops, and other IRES research activities.

• Engage with the Institute’s interdisciplinary community of economists, sociologists, political scientists, and other researchers.

• Produce high-quality scholarly research suitable for academic publication.

Qualifications & Candidate Profile

• Required Education: Ph.D. in Economics, Sociology, Political Science, or a related discipline.

• The Ph.D. must have been received between August 1, 2023 and August 1, 2027.

• Strong record of academic achievement demonstrated through publications, working papers, awards, grants, or related scholarly accomplishments.

• High-quality research agenda and proposed project demonstrating:

  • Originality

  • Academic rigor

  • Feasibility

  • Potential contribution to the field

• Applicants must have a research paper that is published, accepted for publication, or available as a working paper.

• Ability to present scholarly research effectively to academic audiences.

• Demonstrated interest in engaging with the research community at IRES.

Remuneration & Benefits

• Annual Salary: Approximately INR 69.35 lakh.

• Fellowship may be renewed for up to two years.

• Appointment is subject to final budget approval.

• The successful candidate must complete a background check.
