Overview of Role

California State University, San Bernardino invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art with a specialization in Illustration.

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching across the Illustration curriculum, maintain active professional and/or scholarly work, support student mentoring and career development, and participate in departmental, college, and university service.

Key Responsibilities & Teaching Scope

• Teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced Imaging and Illustration courses.

• Contribute to programs such as:

  • BA in Art

  • BFA in Art

  • BA in Visual Art Studies

  • Minor in Animation and Illustration

• Teach additional Art or Design courses where appropriate.

• Potential teaching areas may include:

  • Drawing

  • Life Drawing

  • Special Topics

  • Senior Capstone

• Maintain an active professional and/or research practice.

• Participate in curriculum development.

• Contribute to departmental, college, and university committees.

• Build connections with local, regional, and national creative communities.

• Mentor students in portfolio development and career preparation.

Qualifications & Candidate Profile

Required Qualifications:

• Graduate degree from an accredited university in Illustration or a related field.

• Degree must be completed by the time of appointment.

• At least 2 years of university-level teaching experience as instructor of record in Illustration or related areas.

• Demonstrated excellence in teaching.

• Professional experience in Illustration or a closely related field.

• Strong professional portfolio.

• Experience advising students on professional and career pathways.

• Strong knowledge of Illustration history, theory, and contemporary practice.

• Technical proficiency in industry-standard tools and workflows.

Relevant software and tools may include:

• Adobe Illustrator

• Photoshop

• InDesign

• Procreate

• Clip Studio Paint

• 3D software

• After Effects

• Traditional / analog Illustration processes

Preferred Qualifications

• 3–5 years of undergraduate and/or graduate teaching experience

• Strong understanding of professional Illustration practices, including:

  • Client relations

  • Contracts

  • Pricing

  • Licensing

  • Copyright

  • Project management

  • Freelance practice

  • Entrepreneurship

  • Portfolio development

  • Self-promotion

• Established professional networks.

• Experience creating internships or experiential-learning opportunities.
