Educational Immersion for All: Accessibility and Inclusion in eXtended Reality
Journal: Behaviour & Information Technology
Publisher: Taylor & Francis Group
Special Issue
Manuscript Submission Deadline: 30 November 2026
Behaviour & Information Technology invites original research for a Special Issue examining how eXtended Reality (XR), Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) can be designed and implemented to create accessible, inclusive, and equitable educational experiences.
About the Special Issue
Immersive technologies are transforming education by enabling interactive, three-dimensional, embodied, and multisensory learning experiences. XR environments can potentially enhance engagement, motivation, collaboration, and experiential learning while providing adaptive and personalized opportunities for learners with different abilities and educational needs.
However, accessibility and inclusion remain significant challenges. Usability barriers, inaccessible interaction mechanisms, and limited inclusive-design guidance may prevent students with disabilities, neurodivergent learners, and learners from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds from benefiting equally from immersive technologies. This Special Issue seeks interdisciplinary research addressing these challenges through perspectives from Human–Computer Interaction (HCI), educational technology, accessibility research, learning sciences, and inclusive design.
