Smart Systems and the Governance of Sociotechnical Transformation

Journal: Behaviour & Information Technology
Publisher: Taylor & Francis Group
Special Issue
Manuscript Submission Deadline: 20 October 2026

Behaviour & Information Technology invites submissions for a Special Issue examining smart systems as sociotechnical arrangements that influence behaviour, interaction, coordination, authority, accountability, and governance across contemporary digital environments.

About the Special Issue

Smart systems are increasingly embedded in homes, workplaces, healthcare, education, mobility, public services, and digital platforms. Rather than functioning solely as technical tools, these systems use sensing, data processing, algorithmic decision-making, and automated or semi-automated actions to shape human activities and relationships between individuals, organizations, technologies, and institutions.

This Special Issue seeks to advance human-centred, behavioural, organizational, and sociotechnical perspectives on smart systems. Particular attention is given to how technologies become embedded in everyday practices and institutional settings and how interfaces, algorithms, data architectures, monitoring systems, and automated feedback mechanisms influence behaviour, responsibility, trust, inclusion, exclusion, and power.
