Article Collection
Manuscript Submission Deadline: 31 December 2026
Open Access: Open access publishing options are available for this Article Collection.
Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems invites submissions for an Article Collection examining the situated politics of agroecology, with particular attention to how place, geography, history, institutions, culture, and agrarian relations shape the ways agroecology is understood, practiced, and sustained.
About the Article Collection
Agroecology has developed as a scientific discipline, agricultural practice, and social movement, offering alternatives to industrial agriculture that emphasize ecological sustainability, social justice, and cultural relevance. Its growing importance is closely connected to contemporary challenges involving climate change, food-system crises, rural livelihoods, inequality, and sustainable development.
This Article Collection seeks research that explicitly connects the “where,” “why,” and “how” of agroecology. Authors are encouraged to examine how local agroecosystems, agrarian social organizations, development histories, socio-institutional environments, state-society relations, and cultural politics influence the adoption, interpretation, and long-term viability of agroecological approaches.

Key Research Themes
Crisis & Futures
Research may examine how particular experiences of crisis and their historical legacies influence the socio-political embedding of agroecology. Contributions may also investigate how crises create opportunities for rearticulating agroecological approaches and imagining alternative agroecological futures.
Defining & Delineating Agroecology
Studies may investigate how place-based experiences challenge or reshape definitions of agroecology, how the concept changes across geographical settings, and who holds the authority to determine what constitutes agroecology.
Aesthetics of Agroecology
Research may critically examine associations between agroecology and particular political projects and explore how situated experiences reveal diverse or potentially conflicting political orientations.
Research and Theoretical Approaches
The Article Collection welcomes a range of theoretical perspectives, including:
Political ecology
Agrarian political economy
Environmental history
Feminist theories
Decolonial theories
Place-based and geographically situated approaches
Research may be conducted at different geographical scales, provided that it contributes to understanding how the particularities of place shape agroecological practices and politics.
